NHS 111 Wales Health A-Z : Anabolic steroid abuse

If quickly recognised and treated, the prognosis for steroid withdrawal is generally good. However, without early identification and treatment, further abnormalities may occur, such as electrolyte abnormalities and dehydration. A common treatment that’s often recommended is topical steroids – creams, ointments, lotions or gels via which steroids are applied directly to your skin.

If you are dealing with symptoms an have just stopped a topical steriod treatment, then TSW could be at the root of your issues. ‘Topical steroid withdrawal is a possibility if you have recently stopped long-term treatment with a moderate or high strength steroid. I have been on and off steroids for last 4 years and each time I have been weaned off them. Currently taking 2 prednisalone each day after another 10 shots of chemo, and Oncologist told me after last chemo that soon I would be given reducing dose to end steroid treatment.

All Yellow Card reports received are entered onto the MHRA’s adverse drug reaction database so that they are available for signal detection. Topical corticosteroids are available in multiple forms including creams, lotions, gels, mousses, ointments, or solutions. They are commonly used treatments for many dermatological conditions and are generally considered very safe and effective. Topical corticosteroids are used to treat the symptoms of many skin disorders, such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis.

Steroids are usually given in short courses of a few days or a few weeks. Keep taking your steroids for as long as your specialist tells you to. If you have to take them for longer than a week, you’re likely to be given a steroid card.

How do I know if I have TSW?

However, as time passed many patients required systemic corticosteroids at increasingly frequent intervals, some every 6 to 10 weeks. Daily topical treatment only maintained tolerance of symptoms and mild diminution of the rash. Patients complained that corticosteroids “were not working anymore”. The authors stated that by this point, the initial limited areas of dermatitis had expanded significantly.

The MHRA will continue to monitor reports and provide further updates should they be required. We considered data from Yellow Card reports, in addition to information from the published literature and guidance from other medicines regulators. They’ll discuss your addiction with you, how to safely stop taking steroids, and any obstacles you may face when trying to stop, plus strategies for dealing with those obstacles. Anabolic steroids are usually injected into the muscle or taken by mouth as tablets, but they also come as creams or gels that are applied to the skin.

I’d never really had a skin regime before, just a tonne of moisturiser, so this was a positive step. Well here’s hoping they are short lived and Ill be back to normal soon. I have been looking forward to coming off the meds so much, and now Im dealing with withdrawals!! On a good note, I sleep really well last (without sleeping tablets!) so Im hoping that the insomnia is on its way out.

How long will I need to take steroids for?

Days 2 to 6 – Cravings intensify, in addition to other physical and mental effects. You may experience insomnia, aches, pains, and mood swings, while symptoms like anxiety and depression will peak. Day 1 of quitting the drug – As the substance leaves your system initial withdrawal symptoms may appear, such as fatigue, soreness, and a strong desire to use the drug (cravings). As soon as the withdrawal symptoms begin to intensify, you might notice less energy and alertness.

Steroid withdrawal causes a variety of physical symptoms that can manifest when you stop taking the drug. It is important to know that you may not experience every possible withdrawal symptom, and that the intensity of your withdrawal will be determined by various different factors, including how long you’ve used the drug. Low blood pressure can occur when you stop taking steroids, and, when it becomes severe, it can lead to dizziness and fainting. When you stop taking steroids, your body needs time to readjust and, at first, it won’t be able to make enough cortisol to make up for the absence of the drug.

Symptoms of Steroid Withdrawal

The recommended course of treatment largely depends on weighing up the benefits of corticosteroids against the side effects. If a woman needs to take steroid tablets whilst she is breastfeeding, prednisolone is usually recommended. Steroid injections, inhalers and sprays aren’t thought to pose a risk to babies being breastfed.

You may be given both a course of oral and also rectal steroids simultaneously. Intravenous steroids are usually given to people when they are admitted to hospital. As well as being an anti-inflammatory medication, they also work to suppress the immune system. This may cause you to become more susceptible to catching infections.

If you’re on some HIV meds they can cause raised levels of steroids in the blood, making side effects more likely. Steroid creams are safe to use during pregnancy, but if you’re breastfeeding you’ll need to make sure any cream is wiped off before feeding. Very strong topical steroids aren’t usually prescribed during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
